What to Wear to Reformer Pilates + Why Grip Socks Are Essential

Reformer Pilates is becoming one of the most popular ways to build strength, improve posture and move better — but if you’re new to it, you might be wondering what to wear. Unlike a gym session, the reformer is a moving machine, and the right clothing helps you stay safe, comfortable and able to move freely.

Here’s everything you need to know — including why grip socks are so important, and how they support your workout.

The goal is simple: clothes you can move in, without anything getting in the way. And something you feel comfortable in.

1. Fitted, comfortable leggings or shorts

Reformer Pilates involves controlled, precise movements on a moving platform. Clothing that’s too loose can:

  • get caught in the reformer springs

  • shift around and distract you

  • make certain movements harder

Choose leggings or close-fitting shorts that stretch with you and stay in place.

Avoid:

  • ultra-loose joggers

  • slippery fabrics

  • anything that needs adjusting every 5 minutes

2. A supportive, comfortable top

You don’t need anything heavy-duty, but you do want something that:

  • stays in place when you lie down

  • doesn’t ride up

  • allows your instructor to check your posture and alignment

Tank tops, form-fitting tees, or light long-sleeves all work well.

3. Layer if you want — but keep it light

Your body warms up quickly, especially during footwork, planks and full-body flows.
Bring a thin top or light layer you can easily remove.

Why Grip Socks Are Essential for Reformer Pilates

This is the one item that surprises most beginners — and the most important.

At Vitalis Studios, grip socks are required for all classes, and here’s why:

1. Improved Safety

The reformer is a smooth surface, and many movements involve standing, kneeling or balancing on the carriage.

Grip socks prevent slipping and give you:

  • safer footing

  • better traction

  • more stability on the moving platform

2. Better Performance

With stronger grip, you can:

  • push more confidently

  • hold planks more easily

  • stabilise during single-leg work

  • improve your overall technique

Better grip = better results.

3. Hygiene + Comfort

Reformer classes involve shared equipment. Grip socks:

  • keep your feet protected

  • keep equipment cleaner

  • reduce sweat + slip risk

They also keep your feet warm during winter months (an underrated benefit!)

What Type of Grip Socks Should You Choose?

Not all grip socks are the same — some are thin and slippery, while others are thick and bulky.

The best studio socks have:

  • Full sole grip patterns (not just the heel)

  • A snug fit that won’t slide

  • Breathable fabric

  • Arch support

  • A low or mid-rise design depending on preference

Vitalis Studios stocks high-quality, studio-approved grip socks in our online shop. They’re durable, comfortable and designed to support your workout.

What Not to Wear to Reformer Pilates

Some clothing can make movements harder or less safe. Avoid:

  • Baggy trousers (catch in springs)

  • Thick hoodies or jumpers (restrict movement)

  • Zips or buttons (can damage reformer upholstery)

  • Slippery socks (no grip = unsafe)

  • Short shorts that ride up (you’ll spend the class adjusting them)

What About Footwear?

You won’t need trainers or shoes.
For health, safety, and hygiene reasons - Reformer Pilates is always done in grip socks

Standard socks = unsafe
Bare feet = allowed but less hygienic (and less stable)

This is why most studios — including ours — recommend or require grip socks.

Do You Need Special Pilates Clothing?

Not at all. The goal is comfort, mobility and safety.
Wear something you feel confident and relaxed in.

Many clients wear:

  • activewear they already own

  • gym leggings

  • fitted sports tops

  • breathable sets

Just avoid anything restrictive or overly loose.

What to Bring to Your First Class

To help you feel prepared, bring:

  • A water bottle

  • A light layer

  • Your grip socks (or buy a pair at the studio)

  • A hair tie if needed

  • A positive attitude — reformer is fun!

Everything else is provided.
